Screening of Documentary on Margaret Cousins at Irish Embassy

New Delhi: “What a unique presentation. What a wonderful piece of information. Large number of people must know about India and Irish relations through this great lady Margaret Cousins.,” said Dr. Sandeep Marwah President of International Chamber of Media and Entertainment Industry on the screening of Documentary on Irish suffragist and social leader Margaret Cousins and her life in India at the residence of H.E. Brendan. Ward Ambassador of Ireland to India.

“We must have another show at Marwah Studios so that young generation can relate the relation between two countries and contribution of Irish lady in Indian History,” added Dr. Marwah also Chair for Indo Ireland Film and Cultural Forum.

“I welcome you to the screening of a very exclusive film, I am sure you will like it. I am also thankful to the members of the board of All India Women’s Conference for their gracious presence and bringing out this precious information through this film,” said H.E. Brendan Ward Ambassador of Ireland to India.

Margaret Elizabeth Cousins 7 November 1878 – 11 March 1954) was an Irish-Indian educationist, suffragist and theosophist who established All India Women’s Conference (AIWC) in 1927. She was the wife of poet and literary critic James Cousins,  with whom she moved to India in 1915. She is credited with preserving the tune of the Indian National Anthem Jana Gana Mana  based on the notes provided by Tagore himself in February 1919, during Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to the Madanapalle College. She was a member of the Flag Presentation Committee which presented the National Flag to the Constituent Assembly  on 14 August 1947.

The event was attended by Sheela Kakde Patron AIWC, Kalyani Raj President AIWC, H.E. Daniels Mariana Sezonov Ţane Ambassador of Romania, Cornelis J. Groeneveld of Embassy of Netherland, and Luc Menard from Embassy of France,. Peader O Hubain Second Secretary & Consul Embassy of Ireland, number of Diplomats, film lovers, researchers, members of International Chamber of Media and Entertainment Industry, members of All India Women’s Conference and people from art and culture fraternity were also present there.
